WebP vs PNG: what changes

WebP and PNG can both hold transparency, so this conversion keeps cut-out logos, stickers and interface elements intact. PNG is lossless: every pixel your browser decodes from the WebP is written out exactly, with no new compression artifacts added.

PNG cannot make a lossy WebP sharper. If the WebP was saved lossy, its softness is already part of the picture and the PNG simply preserves it. The price is a much bigger file, often several times the size of the WebP, in exchange for wide editor support.

How to convert WebP to PNG on any device

  • Design and editing tools

Some older editors, print tools and sign-making programs cannot open WebP. Convert to PNG first, then import the PNG as a layer; transparent areas arrive as transparent.

  • Collecting assets from the web

A desktop browser's Save image as usually gives you a .webp. Drop the whole batch here and take the ZIP, which keeps each file's name and swaps the extension to .png.

  • On a phone or tablet

Use Choose images and select several WebP files at once from Photos or Files. A single picture downloads directly; a selection arrives as one ZIP.

Troubleshooting WebP to PNG

  • The PNG is much larger than the WebP

Lossless storage costs space. If the image has no transparency and size matters more than perfection, the WebP to JPG converter gives a far smaller file.

  • Only one picture came out of my animation

A PNG holds a single still image, so an animated WebP is converted using its first frame.

  • A photo looks rotated in one app and upright in another

Some WebP photos store their rotation as a tag instead of turning the pixels. The converter applies the tag while decoding, so the PNG is upright in every viewer. If the original looked sideways somewhere, that viewer was ignoring the tag.

Color profile and metadata

A PNG made here contains pixels only. Text fields such as the author, capture date or GPS position are not written, and an embedded color profile is dropped, so colors are interpreted as sRGB. For wide-gamut artwork that must keep its profile, convert in your editing app instead.
