WebP vs JPG: what changes
WebP is an image format Google built for the web, and it stores a picture in noticeably less space than JPG. JPG is older, but every phone, printer, office suite and upload form understands it, which is why a WebP saved from a website sometimes refuses to open, attach or upload.
The JPG is written at 92% quality, which looks very close to the original for photos. Expect it to be larger than the WebP it came from. JPG has no transparency, so any see-through area is filled with white.
How to convert WebP to JPG on any device
Windows and Mac
Drag the WebP files from File Explorer or Finder onto the drop area, or press Choose images. Several files at once come back as a single ZIP; one file downloads on its own.
Saved from a website
Chrome, Edge and Firefox often save web pictures as .webp when you use Save image as. Drop that file here and the JPG is ready in a moment.
iPhone, iPad and Android
Tap Choose images and pick the WebP from your Files app or Downloads folder. The finished JPG downloads to the same place your browser saves other downloads.
Troubleshooting WebP to JPG
The picture has a white background now
That is expected: JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are painted white. If you need the see-through areas, use the WebP to PNG converter instead.
My animated WebP became a still picture
JPG cannot animate, so only the first frame of the animation is converted.
The page says the file is not valid
The converter reads the contents of a file, not its name. A truncated download, or a file renamed to .webp that is really another format, will be rejected or reported as corrupted. Download the original again.
Color profile and metadata
The JPG is drawn from the pixels your browser decodes, so camera details, dates and location tags stored in the WebP are not copied across. An embedded color profile is not carried over either, and colors are rendered in sRGB. A rotation stored in the WebP is applied to the pixels, so the JPG opens upright everywhere.
